Barking Tuna Festival began in 1976 under the name “WIDR Kite Flights.” The festival included live music, events and activities for students and the Kalamazoo community alike.
According to Andrew Grabowski, GM at WIDR from ′05-09, the name of the festival changed sometime in the 80s. “Barking Tuna” came from an inside joke about an employee at Faunce Student Services. “The Barking Tuna is a mythical creature that is the water cousin of the Chupacabra, the Mexican Bigfoot,” he told the Western Herald in 2008.
Throughout the years, WIDR booked some pretty cool independent artists for the festival, including Nirvana, Spoon, RJD2 and The New Pornographers!
